Work Out Your Salvation

We want and need to know our purpose whether we honestly admit this to ourselves or not. We can’t help but sometimes wonder if what we do each day matters and if what we say changes anyone’s life for the better. God built this longing into our design and His repeated instructions to know Him first and put Him before all other things are the first four of the Ten Commandments. Knowing God intimately and putting Him before all other “gods” is difficult when attempted with our will alone because our sin nature corrupted what was once in perfect alignment with God’s will, BUT we do have an option. Oswald Chambers explains this well in a few short words.

In someone who has been born again, the source of the will is Almighty God. “…for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” With focused attention and great care, you have to “work out” what God “works in” you— not work to accomplish or earn “your own salvation,” but work it out so you will exhibit the evidence of a life based with determined, unshakable faith on the complete and perfect redemption of the Lord. As you do this, you do not bring an opposing will up against God’s will— God’s will is your will. Oswald Chambers, My Utmost For His Highest, Revised Edition

“So then, my beloved, even as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who worketh in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and questionings: that ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye are seen as lights in the world,” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:12-15‬ ‭ASV‬‬

The initial leap of faith this takes to desire Him more than the things of the flesh is given us by receiving the measure of grace it takes to do so. The flesh is strong and our Adam inherited sin nature is unavoidable, so how do we do this? If you are not born again from above, how will you know you have received the measure of grace to believe Jesus can fix things in your life? Before we can be open to a new belief it is necessary to admit there are circumstances in our life that need fixing and beliefs we hold onto might be the cause. The cost to continue holding to a wrong belief can be far greater than the cost it requires to challenge one. Once I got this and began to challenge my own, life was made better in every possible way. I hope and believe yours can be, too. Peace, love and the Hope of better things to come! Steve
